Ancient and marvelous Kazan

It is a tradition to start sightseeing walks in Kazan with the Kazan Kremlin. The excursion in the Kremlin will take about one hour including visiting Kul Sharif Mosque and Blagoveshchensk cathedral. Here you will see the palace of the President of the Republic, the ruins of the Kazan khans’ mausoleum. From the observation platform you will enjoy a beautiful view on the Kazanka river and on new and old districts of the city.

From the Kremlin walls Bauman Street (Kazan Arbat) starts. It is a pedestrian street in the historical city centre. Bauman Street is one of the oldest in Kazan. It was called “Nogayskaya road” in the period of Kazan Khanate and connected the Kremlin with the Southern Gates of the city. Since 1552 the street got the name of Bolshaya Prolomnaya, because as the legend says during the attack on Kazan there was a big explosion (break, prolom) in one of the fortifications on this street. Only after the Great Revolution the street was renamed in honor of the famous revolutionary Bauman.

Peterburgskaya Street was built with the support of St.-Petersburg Government to the 1000-th anniversary of Kazan. The main artistic idea of the street is to create “a part of St.-Petersburg” using architectural methods and paving patterns typical of St.-Petersburg. In old times the street had names of Sverdlov and Georgievskaya. The crossing of Peterburgskaya and Esperanto Streets is the place where the “Metroelectrotrans” Alley of Glory is situated. Here you can see old trams, beautiful memorable bas-relief and the Lovers’ Tree.

On one of the alleys of Peterburgskaya street, behind the Catholic church we will come up to the lake. This is Lake Kaban, on the shores of which tatar people used to live during many centuries. Here Tatar Sloboda was founded and here the old mosques of 18-19th centuries still exist. Here you can see the Gabdulla Tukai Literary Museum and Kayum Nasyri Museum. While walking along Old-Tatar Sloboda you will get acquainted with the tatar life before revolution.
