Kazan – Raifa monastery – Sviyazhsk

During our tour will get acquainted with the city of Kazan, you will visit Old-Tatar Sloboda, Cloth Hall, the Puppet Theatre, The Tram Museum in the open air, and other attarctions of the great city. After we check in the hotel, we will have a shopping and museum walk. The Night lights of Kazan excursion if requested will be held.

Next day we go to the Raifa Monastery for the morning service if requested and for the excursion around the monastery and to Raifa Lake. We will see the sculptures of the monastery and the holly spring. Raifa Bogoroditsky Monastery for men is one of the most famous not only in the Volga region, but all over the country. A lot of people come here every day to listen to the local choir and their beautiful spiritual motets. Believers come here to find peace in the souls, to touch miracle-making icons and to confess. The main shrine of the Monastery is the miracle-working image of the Mother of God of Georgia of more than 400 years old.

In the afternoon we move to the fortress city of Sviyazhsk situated on a picturesque island, that was built under the order of Ivan the Terrible in 1551 as a military base of the Russian army during the siege of Kazan. Now it is a unique monument to the Russian Orthodox culture in the centre of the Turkic-Muslim world. We walk around the island to the Sts. Constantine’s and Helen’s church of the 17th century. The defense territory of the fortress was much bigger than those of the Nizhny Novgorod, Pskov and Moscow Kremlins. In 1552 the last successful assault of Kazan was carried out and the Kazan Khanate was destroyed. Kazan lost its independence and became a part of the Russian State.

  • Svobody Square and its attractions – The City hall, the Concert hall, the Opera and Ballet Theatre, “The White House ” of Tatarstan, Black Lake. From the Square near the National Culture Centre there is a magnificent view to the sporting facilities of Universiade 2013
  • Cathedral of St.Peter and Paul built in 1723- 1726 in memory of the visit of Peter I. Bogoroditsky Monastery  and the miraculous Kazan Icon of Mother of God, that was returned from Vatican to Russia under the will of Pope of Rome. Kazan University, Kremlyovskaya Street, Millenium Park
  • The tour along Peterburgskaya street and Bauman Street: Church of the Epiphany, The Kazan Publishing House, a sculpture of the Kazan Cat, the carriage of Catherine II, the Shalyapin Chamber Hall, the “navel” of the city of Kazan
  • The tour along Bolaq and its bridges (Lozhkinskiy, Lebedevskiy, Romanovskiy), the Palace of Farmers, the banks of the Kazanka River.
    The excursion to the Kazan Kremlin – the heart of the Republic of Tatarstan: May 1 square, the National Museum, The city Hall , Kremlin Spasskaya Tower, The Savior’s Transfiguration monastery, the Cannon Yard Museum, The Governor’s Palace, Cathedral of the Annunciation(with the excursion), Leaning Suyumbike Tower, mausoleum of the Kazan khans. You will see a magnificent panorama of the city and the rivers around it. You will hear the legends of the city, you will see its unique monuments. The culmination of the excursion program is the pearl of the Kazan Kremlin – the main mosque of the Tatar Republic – Kul Sharif Mosque (with the excursion inside)

    Day 1

  • Old-Tatar Sloboda, one of the famous sights of the city. It was built by Ivan the Terrible after the siege of Kazan in 1552. The first people living here were tatars who took part in the siege
  • Lake Kaban where the chest with innumerous treasures is situated. The legend says that the chest was hidden on the bottom of the lake during the siege of Kazan
  • The central streets of the city of Kazan that were visited by Pushkin, Gorky, Tolstoy and other outstanding people of culture and art
  • The Exaltation of the Cross Church with the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, one of the most revered shrines in Russia. In 2004 Vatican returned the Kazan Icon to Patriarch Alexy II and since that time thousands of pilgrims and tourists come here to touch the miraculous icon
  • National complex “Tugan Avylym” that means “Native Village” in the Tatar language. Here you can find a restaurant with the traditional tatar cuisine, a pancake café with the Russian stove and guest houses decorated in the Tatar style, you can attend different master-classes and interactive programs
  • The Kazan Kremlin is the chief sight of the Republic of Tatarstan, now it is the object of the UNESCO heritage. The whole territory of the Kremlin is the museum-reserve where a lot of museums, Kul Sharif Mosque, Suyumbike Tower and other historical places are found
  • Day 2

  • The Holy Trinity Cathedral. It is the biggest (for about 3000 people) and the youngest building of the Raifa ensemble. The monastery was built by design of architect Malinovsky in 1904 -1910 instead of the old temple (built in the neorussian style at the end of the 19th century)
  • Cathedral of God’s Mother of Georgia, built in honour of the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God of Georgia in 1835-1842 by architect M. Korinfskiy in the neoclassic style. From the middle of the 17th century the icon of Mother of God of Georgia was believed to the miraculous. The legend says that blind and deaf monk Pitirim recovered as soon as the icon was put into his room. In 1658, Metropolitan of Novgorod Nikon, studied the stories about the miracles of this icon set the celebration of the Georgian icon of the Mother of God on August 22 (September 4 Gregorian calendar)
  • The chapel near the spring. Every day people can visit water-shed chapel, consecrated by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexey II in 1997
  • The Church in honor of SS. Reverend Fathers tortured in Sinai and Raifa that was built instead of the wooden church. It was consecrated in 1708. Later on the church was reconstructed in 1892-1897 by designs of Malinovsky (the dining area was added)
  • Raifa Lake, a very picturesque place and one of the sights of the monastery. It is peculiar for the silent frogs that do not croak near the monastery. The legend says that once the monks of Raifa Bogoroditsky Monastery asked God to save them from the croaking of frogs, which prevented them from singing and praying. And the miracle happened: the frogs fell silent. And they are still silent till nowadays
  • The Temple of All Religions , an architectural ensemble in the settlement of Arakchino. Here you can find an orthodox church, a Muslim mosque, a Judean synagogue and a pagoda. It is interesting that initially it was designed to have elements of 16 different religions both existing and those that disappeared
  • The Assumption Men Monastery, founded in 1555 by the first Archimandrite Herman, it was the richest and the most powerful monastery in the Kazan eparchy. In the middle of the 18th century it possessed about 50 villages and settlements with thousands of people. In the Soviet times the building of the monastery was used as a concentration camp and a colony for young criminals
  • The Sviyazhsk Ioanno-Predtechensky Monastery founded in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible. Here we can still find the original wooden trinity church, a rare monument of the ancient times, that was brought here by the order of the Tsar
  • The wooden trinity church, a unique and the only monument of the wooden architecture of the Volga region. The church was built in honour of the Russian troops when they came to the bottom of the Kruglaya Hill on May 17, 1551. The wood for the building of the church was brought from the forests of the Uglich region to the Sviyaga River. Ivan the Terrible himself used to pray in this church before the final battle for Kazan in 1552
  • The Church of St Constantine and Helena. In 1551 Ivan the terrible personally ordered to build a wooden church here. The construction started at the beginning of the 16th century after the city of Sviyazhsk was consecrated. So at the end of the 17th century instead of the wooden building a new stone Church with a separate bell tower appeared
  • The History of Sviyazhsk Museum. It is located in former governmental buildings, dated back to the first half of the 19th century. The exhibitions of the museum show the history of the Sviyazhsk region and its arts and crafts
  • Interactive program “Armour entertainment” (for extra fee). The duration is 30 minutes, but people get unforgettable impression and great pictures to remember such an interesting event. If you choose this program you will see: demonstration of a real medieval battle, clothes and different kinds of armors, you will hear interesting stories about the life of our ancestors and heroes, who protected our Motherland
